Academic Director's Message

Dear Parents,

We have now completed our first month of classes and I am delighted with the way the students have settled down to their work. Our school has grown in size as our reputation spreads, and the new students are showing themselves to be well motivated and delightful young people.

Our Friday afternoon program has operated as planned for the past three weeks and is proving to be a valuable addition to our learning program. In the first week, our new student leaders were elected and, as the year progresses, these boys and girls will have a range of duties to perform.

On our second Friday, the students were asked to respond to a number of questions designed to encourage their future planning. It is important that we all have goals to which we can aspire and I have read the student’s responses with great interest. We asked the students to complete a survey focusing on their particular learning styles, strengths and weaknesses.

Last Friday, we took this a step further and delivered a presentation to students about the need to plan their weekly and daily study to ensure that they were building on their strengths and working hard to overcome any weaknesses. The students were provided with a sample study diary and sample lesson reflection cards. We talked about the difference between homework – completing set tasks – and home study – systematically reviewing the work covered in each lesson each day.

I have now begun a process of interviewing every student to discuss the responses they  provided over the past two Fridays. I am taking the opportunity to encourage them to make effective use of their time both inside and outside of class. These interviews are also giving me an opportunity to learn a little more about each student’s background, interests and concerns.

I am pleased to report that the students are commenting about their learning experiences here as being “different”. They often talk with me about the quality of the teaching they are receiving, and in particular, the fact that they find their teachers friendly, supportive and approachable.

There is a profound body of international educational research that points to the critical importance of the relationship between each teacher and each learner. The expression often used in the West to describe this is “student centred learning”. While it might seem obvious that the student is at the centre of classroom activities, it is not always the case. Good teachers don’t just know their subject content; they know their students. I am delighted think that even at this early stage of the year, so many students are recognising how important they are to their teachers and that their teachers are keen to respond to their particular needs.
